DREAMSCAPES, MIND ESCAPES AND SUB-STATES: WINTER 2013
The history of rave has been a surprising evolution, of a state of mind of a generation, into what is now a sizeable chunk of the public economic market. No-one even bats an eyelid anymore when an old raving organisation is re-packaged as a dance music brand, or even questions the re-sell of names or the lack of adherence to the originals.
Rather than opposing the politics and ethics of the years that legally repressed many peaceful human beings, it has developed some strange practices to sustain a presence in this highly captalised era of the scene. Many genres and sub-genres have notorious politics of their own, often dominating and hindering co-existence and positive evolution of what rave stood for. Though all of this is too often quickly forgotten.
What on earth does this have to do with raving you may ask? Well nothing really but everything at the same time. Understanding from a long-toothed perspective how things are, really answers a lot of the questions inevitably surfacing within the present dance music scene at the moment.
Like many raver we get over-joyed, excited and welcoming the return of the mighty rave organisations from yester-year, especially when they stop off in Bristol's fine soil. Expecting a a tinkle or knock on the door from some old friends, I eagerly anticipated hearing the first bit of news on these old raving giants. Time oddly passes and as the waves remain silent I decided to seek, what I was becoming to think, was a mirage of post-raving days.
So before any of you old school ravers get excited and ready to pay to revisit your rose-tinted memories please be lest hasty. For those of you just breaking into this scene; be as you are, think as you are, be who you are and in doing that you will get the same vibe and memories we did way back when. Chasing a brand to re-live an ideology that has an appealing package was what we were all running from not too! So be the next generation of ravers not consumers and in 10 - 20 years time will be able to tell old raving stories with as much passion as you hear today.
PEACE, LOVE, UNITY AND RESPECT TO YOU ALL AND PLEASE RECOGNISE THE WHOLE HUMAN RACE AS ONE.
